    Maya Angelou was an African-American author, poet, activist, actress and singer, who received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. She was active in the Civil Rights movement, and worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.

    "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" brought her international recognition and acclaim in 1969.
